 Premier Carbon Arc Followspot 1931

 About the Projector

One of a pair originally installed at the Sheffield City Hall this followspot made by Premier, a well known cinema equipment manufacturer was designed to use 6" stage arc carbons.  These early types of carbon were of the low intensity type, without the core additives of Cerium and Thorium that produce the whiter light of the high intensity carbons typical of cinema projectors and follow spots after 1930. This follow spot is typical of the smaller spots used for shorter throws on a fly floor or perch position.  The cast base stand for this lantern is of interest for its inclusion of a 1930 bevel geared screw car jack for adjusting the operating height.  An iris is fitted to the front of the lantern, used with the rack and pinion arc movement focus to control the spot size, as well as a shutter to fade out 'to pin spot'.
